Mom: Where’s the cauliflower

“Ah, I’m just going to call my mom,” I tell Layne, “I’ll just step outside.”

“Sure.”

I don’t know if Robert has gone home for the weekend, but I don’t like my mom rattling around in that giant house alone. And why the heck has she asked me about cauliflower? Is this the beginning of a mental illness or is she being drugged?

“Mom?” when she finally answers.

“Lottie?” her voice faint and confused.

“You sent me a message about cauliflower.”

“I did?”Several beats of silence pass before the dime drops, “Oh, yes, that’s right. Why did you get that? It was supposed to be for Violet. Anyway, I found it. It was tucked away behind the bag of celery in the fruit and vegetable drawer in the fridge.”

“Good. Um, how are you?” I ask her.

“I’m fine, darling.”

“Is Robert there?”

“No, he’s working in the city.”

“Even on a Sunday?”

“Is it Sunday?” she chuckles coldly. “Every day feels the same sometimes.”

“Do you get lonely in that house on your own? I mean…Violet is only there on the weekdays, so it must leave you,” searching for the words, “with some loose ends.”

“No. I don’t get lonely.”

I don’t believe her. “I wonder if Robert could buy you a little companion like a dog.”

“Lottie, they shed hair all over the furniture. I don’t think Alan would like that.”

My stomach lurches. “Alan?”

“What?”

“You said Alan.”

“Did I? How awful?”

“Yes. Awful.” Ignoring the repulsion in the pit of my belly. “Poodles don’t shed hair.”

“Yes, but they still make that awful yapping noise.”

“But a dog would’ve barked at the strange men who broke into the house, so I’d call a pet dog added security, wouldn’t you?” I argue.

“I guess it would be nice to have something to fuss over,” she agrees.

“When do you see Robert again?”

“I have no idea.”

Jeez, they’ve only been married for a few weeks and already cracks are starting to show. “How often do you normally see him?”

“When he shows up.”

“Well…maybe you could call him tonight to discuss the dog idea.”

“I’ll give it a shot, I suppose. How are you anyway?” It always takes me by surprise when she asks me how I am, because it’s so rare. And even when I do talk about myself, she doesn’t seem that interested, or more accurately, her eyes glaze over indicating that she’s floated off to La La Land.

“Good.”

“What’s that banging sound behind you?”

“Um, someone chopping wood.”

“On campus?”

“Yes. Anyway, it’s nice talking to you, Mom. I’ll message later to find out if Robert liked the dog idea.”

“Yes. We’ll see.”

I swipe off with nerves causing havoc in my body. Something doesn’t sit right with me in relation to Mom’s relationship with Robert. I convinced myself at their wedding that he did seem to care for her, but then went on to question it when I stumbled across the weird rough blowjob in his office for one. Ew, why did I have to remind myself of that?

“Oh my…”I gasp when I reenter Layne’s workshop. He’s already put together an entire leg including a clump of wood that’s the foot with hinges that creates a bending ankle and knee.
